Living Conjure is a wonderful introduction to Conjure. Author Starr Casas wrote this book in the way she teaches. As I read the book, I felt like I was back in The Conjure Academy, listening to her lessons. Starr explains the significance of the foundations of Conjure; for example, the importance of the Bible and honoring ancestors. Starr also explains how to figure out which passages are most relevant for your specific magical work. This book provides everything you need to know to start practicing effective Conjure works. I wish I had this book when I began my journey with Conjure several years ago.”
—Charity Bedell, author of Container Magic and coauthor of The Good Witches Guide: A Modern-Day Wiccapedia of Magickal Ingredients and Spells

“Starr Casas is a true occult treasure of the American South, and nothing is a more true practice of the American South than Conjure. The combination of magick—Hoodoo, Christianity, a peppering of Vodou, and American Low Country magickal and spiritual practice—is one of the least understood or discussed. In Living Conjure, she brings Conjure out of the shadows and makes it understandable and accessible, while showing the beauty of it that people often don’t appreciate. She gives examples of lessons in Conjure from her own life—the best way to teach. There is a good dose of humor along with some serious ‘when to stay in your lane’ examples. If the reader doesn’t come away from this book with a greater feeling of being grounded and positive, they don’t get Conjure. If Starr teaches anything, it is that we can all use a little Conjure in our lives.”
—Claudia Williams, occult author and owner of Starling Magickal Occult Shop in New Orleans

Starr Casas was born in the mountains of Kentucky and raised in the culture of the Deep South, and she continues to hold tight to the folk ways of her ancestors. At the age of seventeen, Starr learned how to do cleansings with eggs, herbs, and candles. She has been a Conjure woman for over forty years and the fourth generation of her family to practice traditional southern conjure. A beloved teacher, she presents workshops across the United States. She lives in Texas, outside of Houston.

A beginner-friendly guide to Conjure as it has been practiced in the Deep South and passed down through the generations.

Living Conjure is a beginner’s guide to Conjure written by an authentic Conjure woman with over four decades of working experience. Starr Casas learned Conjure the old-fashioned way: at home, from her relatives and ancestors. She would like to share that knowledge with a new generation of practitioners.

In this foundational book, Starr leads readers step by step toward establishing their own practice, from setting up altars to finding the right tools and creating baths, washes, and powders. Because of Starr’s great experience, long-term practitioners will find topics of interest, too. Included in the book are venerations to the ancestors who passed down this knowledge and introductions to the culture and customs that brought these workings to light.
